This is a more personal blog post to explain the 9 months of silence on this blog and what I plan for it.
In July, I stopped writing here after reconsidering my career as a medical doctor in the USA. This happened at the beginning of a second pregnancy, a time in a woman’s life during which a lot of reflections occur.
What to begin with when you want to eat healthier?
It’s often that I see on Facebook women asking around what they should begin with to eat healthier. I saw some comments from other women, some very good, some very questionable. Instead of writing a small comment there, I decided to make a video to answer the question.
Yesterday, during Memorial day, we had lunch at my family’s place. Homemade quinoa salad, lots of fruits. That was good. We also had hamburgers. And I had a look at the mayonnaise tube. Someone told me: « Look, it’s good, it’s made with real mayonnaise… » So I began to read more on the package and want to share my thoughts with you about food package reading and translating.
This week I went to the doctor to get all the results of my « comprehensive first consultation ». I went to the doctor with 2 questions. But before I even saw the doctor on the first consultation, some assistants took me blood, did some sonograms of my arteries, had a look on my thyroid even if it wasn’t included in the « comprehensive » tests. My first impression was that it was prevention, or should I say screening, for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cholesterol… At first, I thought it might be a good idea in a place where 2/3 of the population is overweight, though being lean and « only » 36 years old, I don’t consider myself at risk yet.
Then I went back for the results. My arteries are fine, as is my heart, my blood sugar (though I told them that I forgot to fast on that morning) and all my cholesterol tests.
I discovered the blood tests results. And every number was normal according to the lab. But according to the nurse, I was low on some of them. And she suggested me to get some vitamins like this, some hormones like that. It would help my energy level. But I don’t have any fatigue. When she understood that I wasn’t ready to take any supplement, she tried to give me some nutritional advice: lower my animal fat intake (well, I’m nearly vegetarian, should I become vegan???), take some fish oil (isn’t it a kind of animal fat?) and maybe eat more animal food to improve my B12 vitamin level…
At the end of the consultation, I didn’t get any answer to my 2 questions, I got 3 new health problems, and no clear recommendation taking my lifestyle into consideration.
What a child eat is often a reason to worry for his parents. Is it too much? Is it enough? He is a picky eater, is it ok to live on bread and pasta? These are questions I am going through with my little one, and I would like to share with you some of the answers I found. When children learn to eat food, we should learn to trust them and to propose a wide variety of food to them to discover.

Happy New Year 2017! How was the end of the year? I spent mine both at my parents’ place in France and at my in-laws’ place in Kansas. The common point between the two trips was that I ate a lot of chocolate. Not the dark 70% cocoa chocolate, no… The fancy ones, with nougat, nuts, caramel, mint… I must be forgetting some nice ones.
